Child and youth counselling may focus on emotional regulation, behaviour, school-related concerns, exam anxiety, social skills, and managing ADHD or family changes. Family counselling supports families in navigating communication challenges, strengthen relationships, and work through challenges together. Yes. Our therapists work with refugee claimants, newcomers, military members, first responders, and their families. Counselling sessions can address experiences related to trauma, displacement, stress, identity changes, or family adjustment.

Refugee claimants are encouraged to let us know their status when contacting our office, as we offer a specialized intake process to help streamline and prioritize access to therapy, including coordination of coverage where applicable. Clients who require counselling services covered through IFHP or medavie blue cross are asked to inform us at intake so we can match them with therapists who are registered with the appropriate funding programs. Our goal is to reduce barriers to care and ensure timely, appropriate support tailored to each client’s circumstances.

During your first counselling session, the therapist’s main focus is to help you feel safe, supported, and understood. The session usually begins with a discussion about confidentiality, consent, and how counselling works, so you know what to expect. Your therapist will invite you to share what brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from therapy. You may be asked gentle questions about your current concerns, personal history, and any challenges affecting your well-being. There is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. This session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about the counselling process. Together, you and your therapist will begin to identify goals and discuss next steps, setting the foundation for future sessions.

There is no expectation for you to share everything at once. Counselling progresses at a pace that feels manageable and respectful of your comfort level.

Counselling services are confidential and follow professional and legal standards in Ontario. Information shared in sessions is kept private, with limited exceptions related to safety or legal obligations, which your therapist will explain in more detail at the start of your session.

Confidentiality helps create a safe space where individuals and families can speak openly and honestly about their experiences.

Getting started is easy, you can contact Family-Therapy™ by phone, email, or book a free consultation through our website. During this initial step, you can ask questions, discuss availability, and explore which counselling services may be appropriate for you or your family.
